Configure Default Fields

From the homepage of your codex profile, click the Actions button which is a grey circle with a black triangle in the center, located along the top right of the page. Select Control panel from the drop-down menu. From this page, click on the MANAGE FIELDS button.

Configurable Default Fields

The first table on the Manage fields page is the Configurable default fields table. These fields are automatically preselected by Codex and can be customized.


Table Headings

Codex assigns four default labels to a media asset which are Species, Region, Social groups, and Relationship.

States the type of interaction, either an Encounter, Individual, or a Sighting.

  • Actions

Click on the pencil icon under actions to edit any of the Label fields.


Species

Click on the pencil icon at the end of the Species row. You can search for a species using the ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System) species database.

You can search for a species using either their scientific name (genus and species) or their common name. Species that have a star before their scientific name mean they have machine learning, preconfigured, detection and identification pipeline.

To add species, click the plus icon under Add and a tick symbol will appear in place of the plus to indicate the species have been added.

Under EDIT SPECIES is a list of all the added species, using their scientific names. To remove a species, click the cross symbol next to their name. When you hover over it, the common name for the species will also appear. Under the add column, the tick next to the species name will revert back to a plus, indicating the species has been removed.

Click the yellow FINISH button to save any changes.


Regions

Click the pencil icon at the end of the Region row to edit the field. Click the ADD REGION button to add a new location. A field will appear for you to type in the new region.

Each listed region has a plus symbol next to it. Click on this to organize regions into a hierarchy. Regions staggered towards the left are larger areas, such as countries (e.g., South Africa). Regions staggered towards the right are smaller areas within the larger region (e.g., KwaZulu-Natal).

Click the yellow SAVE button to save any changes.

Relationships

Click on the pencil icon at the end of the Relationship row to edit the relationship fields. The listed fields will appear when creating relationships on an individual’s page.

Click the ADD TYPE button to add a type of relationship (e.g., familial or social grouping).

Click the plus icon next to each relationship type to add a specific role within that type (e.g., mother or alpha).

Click the bin icon to delete any relationship types or roles.

Click the yellow SAVE button to save any changes.

Social Groups

The listed social group roles appear on the drop-down menu for any social groups made on an individual’s page.

Click the ADD ROLE button to create new social group roles that will be available to choose from on an individual’s page. Click the bin icon next to any role to delete it.

Cick the Allow multiple of this role toggle button to turn it yellow if you want to allow more than one individual to assume the same role.

Click the yellow SAVE button to save any changes you have made.


Configure Custom Fields

Editing custom fields allows for the maintenance of all metadata, for both recent and historical catalogs. There are three types of customizable fields: Individual, Sighting, and Encounter.

  • Individual

Individuals are animals that are recorded and identified already within the Wildbook platform.

  • Sighting

Sightings are instances of a human interacting with one or more animals at a specific location and time.

  • Encounter

Encounters are instances of a human interacting with a single animal at a specific location and time.


Field Categories

Field categories is the second table on the Manage fields page. Label is customizable, it helps organize fields on the report sighting form. Type is how to categorize Label, it can either be sighting fields, encounter fields, or individual fields.

  1. Click the ADD NEW button.
  2. A pop-up window will appear with spaces for Label and a drop down menu for Type.
  3. You can customize Label.
  4. Based on what you enter on Label, you need to select sighting fields, encounter fields, or individual fields on the drop-down menu for Type.
  5. Select the SAVE button.

Creating a New Custom Field

  1. Select the any ADD NEW button.
  2. You will be directed to a page where you can configure a New custom field.
  3. On the Configuration panel on the right, you will see the spaces you have to enter.
  4. Enter your custom field_name on the space for Database field. Note that the Database field cannot contain spaces or special characters.
  5. Select the Type of your custom field on the drop-down menu. Note that once you save all the changes you made, Type cannot be edited anymore.
  6. To preview the changes you’re making, the right side of the page is dedicated to a live view of all the changes as you make them.
  7. Enter your preferred Field label on the space provided for Label.
  8. Enter the Field description on the Description space.
  9. Select the Category on the drop-down menu. Note that the options here are based on your Field categories.
  10. Enter a custom Default value in the space provided.
  11. Toggle the Required switch in the middle of the configuration panel if you want to require Label, Description, Category, and Default value to be entered whenever a Sighting is reported.
  12. Check the preview on the right to make sure all information is correct.
  13. Click the SAVE FIELD button.

Editing Custom Fields

  1. Select the pen icon to edit the custom fields you’ve created.
  2. You will be directed to the Edit custom field page.
  3. Aside from the custom field Type, everything can be edited on the Configuration panel on the right.
  4. A live preview on the right will show you all the changes you made,
  5. Click the Save field button to save all the changes you made.

Delete Custom Fields

  1. Select the trash can icon to delete the custom fields you’ve created.
  2. A pop-up window will appear to confirm that you want to delete a custom field.
  3. Click the DELETE button to confirm the changes that you want to make.
